Metalcraft supports New York City's MillionTreesNYC Initiative with QR code tags

Mason City, Iowa (March 25, 2015) – Metalcraft is helping Nektar Data Systems track trees planted as part of New York City's MillionTreesNYC initiative. Metalcraft's durable Photo-Anodized Metal tags printed with QR codes are at the center of work to track, record and report on the effort to plant and care for one million new trees across the City's five boroughs in the next decade.

MillionTreesNYC is a citywide, public-private program growing the urban forest—street trees, park trees, and trees on public, private and commercial land—by 20 percent.

The City of New York's Parks Department will track, record and report on all contractors and trees using Nektar Data Systems' Histree, a cloud-based mobile data collection solution. Histree will document, map and quantify exactly when and where work is being performed by contractors, capturing tree inspections and assessments, pictures, date and time stamps records, as well as the exact GPS map location of each tree and event.

Metalcraft's custom Photo-Anodized Metal tag is the durable product used for tree identification – double-sided with a grommet for cable attachment to the tree. The construction withstands wind, sun and other exposure. Each is printed with a unique ID presented as a QR Code, along with the logos for the program and the City. A quick scan moves field data events to the cloud.

"Nektar's expertise in data management has produced a simple yet powerful solution," said Metalcraft president and CEO Steve Doerfler. "The MillionTreesNYC project shows how mobile data can improve asset tracking and management as the City plants about 25,000 trees each year, and Metalcraft is pleased to have a role in tagging the trees as they get planted."
