General UID Information
What is UID?

UID is a Department of Defense mandate that requires a Unique Item Identifier (UII) to track items throughout their lifecycle.
What is a Unique Item Identifier (UII)?
The data elements used to make up a Unique Item Identifier include enterprise identification and serialization of each item that the enterprise produces. Enterprise identification may identify the manufacturer, supplier, depot, program management office or a third party and is assigned by a registered issuing agency (i.e., DUNS Number, UCC, CAGE Number). The data elements of the enterprise identifier and their corresponding unique serial number eliminate any possibility of duplicate numbers and provide permanent identification for the lifecycle of the item.
How does UID affect me?
All DoD contractors, suppliers and DoD agencies are now required to have a unique item identifier on all qualifying items including end item deliverables, legacy items and newly requisitioned government property in possession of contractors.
What is the purpose of UID?
The primary objectives for Unique Item Identification include:
- Integration of item data across the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Federal and industry asset management systems
- Improved item management and accountability
- Improved asset visibility and lifecycle management
