What Is RFID and How Does It Work?

RFID, or Radio Frequency Identification, is a technology that captures digital data from tags or labels using radio waves. Similar to barcoding, RFID enables the transfer of data without requiring a direct line of sight. Unlike barcodes, RFID tags can be read from a distance, offering enhanced flexibility.

An RFID system consists of three main components:

  1. Tags: These small devices, either passive or active, contain a microchip and an antenna. Passive tags rely on energy from the reader to transmit data, while active tags have their own power source for longer-range communication.
  2. Hardware: RFID readers and antennas capture the data from tags. These readers can be handheld, fixed, or embedded in other devices, while antennas determine the range and reliability of data transmission.
  3. Software: RFID software processes, stores, and analyzes the data. Integrated into systems like inventory or supply chain management, it helps automate processes and reduce errors.

Used in various industries, RFID enhances asset tracking, inventory management, security, and logistics. For instance, in retail, RFID helps prevent theft and improve inventory accuracy, while in logistics, it tracks shipments and optimizes supply chain operations.
