Asset Tracking & Its Impact on the Economy

You can’t turn on the news these days without hearing about how the economy is affecting one thing or another.

I would like to take a radical glass is half full approach and look at how today’s economy could potentially have a positive impact on something – asset tracking. We all know budgets are tight and a lot of new equipment purchases are being delayed. Isn’t that the perfect time to do an internal inventory of the equipment you already have?

Durable Asset Tags - Metalcraft Quality Testing

The crash test dummy is an icon of product testing that was especially popularized by public service announcements encouraging passengers to wear their seat belts. Crash dummies have evolved into sophisticated models of the passengers (humans -- and even dogs) that are used to best analyze automotive design and performance.

Benchtop Fiber Laser - Creating Compliant UID Labels & Tags

One of the key points in the UID mandate is the UII must last the lifetime of the item. This is true regardless of whether you are complying with a pre-printed UID label or are creating the UID labels onsite. Laser engraved UID nameplates are one way users can create their own UID nameplates onsite when quicker turnaround times are needed, but yet you don't want to sacrifice too much durability over pre-printed tags.

Choosing the Right Asset Tag

If you’ve never purchased an asset tag before, you might be wondering what kind of tag is right for you. There are many factors that play a role in determining the right kind of tag, and with so many products ranging from small polyester labels to metal nameplates and even RFID tags, it can be hard to know where to start.

The True Meaning of Asset Tracking

Something as simple as asset tracking can easily be misunderstood by engineers, project managers and purchasing departments in a rush to find a solution for a track and trace, asset tracking, identification or access control problem.

The term "asset tracking" encompasses all of these fields and more. Traditionally, many companies or project managers viewed asset tracking as part of the accounting department and went around once a year looking for desks, computers and equipment to verify the existence of an item on the inventory list.

QR Codes in Asset Tracking Applications

A confused crossword puzzle. A psychedelic postage stamp. A barcode on drugs. These images are used to describe QR (quick response) codes in a recent article I read on the increased usage of QR codes for marketing purposes. As a marketer I would agree they are a great tool to have in your arsenal and we have been integrating them into our materials to give more exposure to some of our other online materials - i.e. YouTube videos and customer case studies.

Keg Tracking: You’ve Got to Track ‘Em Before You Tap ‘Em

With all the beer commercials that regularly glut your television or computer screen, you might suspect that as the beer-keg rolls, so turns the world. That isn’t necessarily the case, of course. Beer sales from major breweries throughout North America remain highly profitable, although there has been little overall growth in consumption. However, what is a remarkable phenomenon over the past decade has been the continued rise of microbrews across America. As things stand, craft beer sales continue to increase by double digits each year.

Bar code Symbologies: 1d barcode vs. 2d barcode

Bar code certainly simplified identifying, tracking, and controlling of assets, equipment and processes beginning in the early 80’s. In short, bar code was a technology that revolutionized data capture.  In the “early days” selecting a bar code symbology was not extremely complex; there were just a few choices.

Tamper Evident Labels - One Product, Two Applications

Everyone likes a good deal, right? Well what if I told you that you could get an asset tag that would perform not one, but two applications for you? More on that in a second, first I want to quickly review the benefits of having an asset tracking program. Many of you out there are already familiar with the benefits of an asset tracking program, but for anyone who isn't familiar or may need a refresher here are a couple of the big ones.

Aluminum Tags

Popular throughout the second half of the twentieth century for both machine tools and architecture, anodized metal can also be used to transpose photographs onto its surface. For over 50 years, the technique has been one of the principal methods by which labels and barcodes are exported onto metal surfaces. Unlike laser engraving, which many mistakenly believe to be a more indelible technique, photo anodizing never breaks up the metal’s outward layer; instead, photo negatives are printed on polyester film and then exposed onto the photosensitive metal.

Durable Barcode Labels - What Does it Mean To You?

Durable - it's a term that is thrown around pretty loosely in our industry, but can mean different things to different people. Does it mean it stands up to high temperatures, chemicals, or abrasion? What about all three?
